I started MW Drafting & Design with one clear mission: to raise the standard of architectural drawings used for building permit applications in Ontario. As a former municipal plans examiner, I quickly recognized that a strong foundation in the Ontario Building Code is the key to getting projects approved as efficiently as possible.
When I transitioned into the role of a building inspector, working with multiple municipalities across Ontario, I gained invaluable experience working directly with contractors and homeowners. Every day, I navigated the complexities of real-world construction sites. This hands-on experience gave me a deep understanding of what needs to be included in design drawings—not only to secure permit approvals but to ensure they’re practical and readily accepted by contractors and homeowners alike. My approach is grounded in pragmatic design that balances efficiency and functionality.
What I enjoyed most about being an inspector was feeling like a vital part of the construction team. I loved using my practical decision-making skills and construction experience to help projects move forward. But over time, I realized that as an inspector, my ability to influence positive project outcomes was limited. By the time I got involved, many projects had already begun, and I often found myself identifying costly issues that could have been avoided with better planning.
That’s why, as of January 1, 2020, I made the decision to leave municipal employment and commit full-time to MW Drafting & Design. Here, I can apply my knowledge and experience from the very start, ensuring successful project outcomes from the ground up.
Now, over ten years later, I continue to support a team of designers who embody these founding principles. Together, we’re committed to raising the standard for architectural design, ensuring every project runs smoothly, from permit approval to completion.
